Honoring the Light Within: A Solstice Reflection for International Yoga Day

Kayla Shantel | JUN 20, 2025

As the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, the June Solstice invites us to pause, reflect, and realign. Marking the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, the Summer Solstice is a natural celebration of light, growth, and the abundance of life. It’s no coincidence that this radiant turning point is also honored as International Yoga Day, a global celebration of unity, inner peace, and conscious living.

This day holds deeper meaning than just striking a pose—it’s an opportunity to live in tune with nature’s rhythms, reconnect with what nourishes you, and embody your practice beyond the mat.

The Solstice: Nature’s Reminder to Pause and Realign

The solstice is not just an astronomical event—it’s a seasonal mirror. Nature is in full bloom, reminding us of the energy and light that exists within us. But with all this outward expansion, the solstice also carries a quiet wisdom: what grows externally must be balanced with inner awareness.

In yoga therapy, we explore this dynamic balance of effort and ease, known as sthira and sukha. This solstice, let these principles guide your movement, your breath, and your life.

International Yoga Day: Union, Awareness, and Action

Yoga, which means union, is more than just a practice—it’s a way of being. Whether you’re deepening your breath during meditation, grounding your feet on the earth in mountain pose, or simply making conscious choices about your lifestyle, you’re participating in yoga.

International Yoga Day is a beautiful reminder that yoga is for every body and every season of life. It’s not about perfection—it’s about presence.

How You Can Celebrate

Whether you’re new to yoga or deep in your journey, here are a few ways to honor the solstice and celebrate International Yoga Day:

  • Move with Intention: Try a slow, grounding flow at sunrise or a Sun Salutation series outdoors. Move not to perform, but to feel.
  • Reflect and Reconnect: Journal or meditate on the question, What am I growing? What needs more light?
  • Live Seasonally: Enjoy summer’s bounty—hydrating fruits, fresh herbs, and meals that energize without overheating the body. (Think mint-infused teas, watermelon-cucumber salads, and cooling coconut oil Abhyanga.)
  • Honor Your Inner Fire: Summer is ruled by the fire element (Agni), which governs transformation and digestion. Yoga and Ayurveda both remind us: tending to your inner flame helps you process life, not just food.
  • Share the Practice: Whether through conversation, social media, or a quiet moment with a loved one, share what yoga means to you.

My own journey into yoga began simply, without knowing it would lead me into a deeper relationship with myself and the world around me. What started as a college class grew into a lifelong practice of healing, curiosity, and resilience. Today, I continue to learn from nature, my students, and the wisdom of ancient traditions that remind us to live with awareness.

Wherever you are in your journey, I hope this solstice reminds you of your light—and that yoga continues to guide you back home to yourself.

In Kindness,

Kayla
