The Autumn Equinox: A Season of Balance, Kindness, and Truth

Kayla Shantel | SEP 22, 2025

As the sun crosses the equator, the autumn equinox brings us into a moment of balance—light and dark held in equal measure before the days slowly lean into night. Nature reminds us that balance is not a fixed state but a dance, a gentle shifting between extremes.

This time of year invites reflection: Where in our own lives do we need greater harmony? What are we ready to release, like the trees letting go of their leaves, so we can step forward lighter, clearer, and more open to joy?

The Yamas as Seasonal Guides

In yoga philosophy, the yamas serve as ethical touchstones—reminders of how we relate to the world and one another. As the equinox turns us inward, two shine brightly for this season:

  • Ahimsa (non-harming / kindness): More than the absence of harm, ahimsa is the practice of compassion in thought, word, and action. In a society that often feels hurried and fragmented, choosing kindness becomes a radical act of balance—soothing division and strengthening connection.

  • Satya (truth): Satya calls us to live in alignment with authenticity. Truth is not only what we speak, but how we embody our values. It asks: Do my choices reflect who I truly am? Am I living with integrity in my relationships, my health, my work, and my dreams?

Together, ahimsa and satya remind us that peace and clarity are not just personal goals but contributions to the collective. When we live kindly and truthfully, we ripple those qualities outward.

Ayurveda’s Wisdom for Balance

Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, offers practices to keep us steady during seasonal change:

  • Nourish with grounding foods: root vegetables, whole grains, warming soups, and herbal teas help us feel centered as the winds of autumn stir.

  • Keep rhythm: regular routines bring calm to body and mind when days begin to shorten.

  • Practice release: just as nature sheds, let go of habits, beliefs, or patterns that no longer serve your growth.

A Season of Renewal

This equinox also aligns with my birthday—a personal reminder of the cycles of renewal. Just as nature shifts, so do we. Each year offers an opportunity to celebrate how far we’ve come and recommit to the path of learning, growth, health, and happiness.

I carry forward the wisdom of yoga and Ayurveda as steady companions: practicing balance when life feels unsteady, choosing kindness in a world that needs more of it, and living in truth so that my inner light can shine more clearly.

Closing Reflection

The equinox teaches us that balance is possible, even amidst change. May this season invite you to:

  • Pause and notice where kindness can soften your day.

  • Speak and live your truth with clarity.

  • Celebrate your own journey of growth and renewal.

As we step into autumn, let us become beacons of light—living examples that harmony, compassion, and authenticity are not just ideals but practices we can embody every day.
